There
were a lot of steps that led me to decide to walk the ancient spiritual
pilgrimage known as the Camino de Santiago, and I am not sure that I am even
conciously aware of all of them yet. I read Shirley Maclaine's account of
her Camino last May, and was enchanted with the idea. Even so, I don't
think I seriously thought I would be able to do it for all the usual reasons;
time, logistics, and the steel plate in my leg. However, when I got a
phone call from my friend Lydia Smith, a talented documentary film maker and a
licensed prayer practitioner from my church, Agape, I started to think
differently. Unbeknownst to me, while I had been reading Shirley
Maclaine's book, Lydia
had been walking the Camino. She hadn't told a lot of people she was
going to walk it, she just sort of up and did it, and she LOVED it! She
was so moved and inspired by the experience that she decided that she wanted to
make her next documentary about it. She told me this on the phone as we were
catching up after not having spoken for a while. The next thing I knew,
she told me that she was looking for someone to walk it while she shot the
documentary and would I be interested. Well, I was definitely interested,
but I hemmed and hawed, worried about my leg. When I told my husband
about it later, he said, call her right back and tell her that you'll do
it! I did, and, well, here I am, counting the days until I go!
Sometimes we need a wake-up call to say 'YES!' - or at least I do, anyway.
My friend Bridget took this picture the other day during one of my
early morning hikes in Griffith Park in Los Angeles. I have been
hiking just about every day for the last month or so in preparation for
my Camino. My dog Tucker comes along and thinks it is great! He won't
be going to Spain, but I hope he will be keeping up with my whereabouts
through this website!
